What is the population of India? Facts about the most populous nation

By May 2023, India is the most populous country in the world. According to the United Nations, at the end of April, India surpassed its neighbor China, which was previously the world’s most populous nation.

China’s population is declining and aging due to family planning policies launched in the 1970s, as well as rising incomes and education, Vox reports. The United Nations expects that China will lose almost half of its population by the year 2100.

However, India contributes more to global working-age population growth than any other country, according to CNN. Birth rates in India have fallen recently, so that will not be the case in 25 years, but currently India’s young, working population is of remarkable size.
