Bessemer Police are investigating the death of a Norfolk Southern train trainee conductor early on Tuesday morning. According to police, a large pole or rod pierced the front of the train around 1am, killing the conductor. The man was later identified as Walter James Griffin, III, 43, of Hueytown. The train was passing another train when the accident happened. The train stops at North 32nd Street and Carolina Avenue. Norfolk Southern issued a statement following the tragic accident: “Norfolk Southern is saddened by the loss of a member of our team today. Our thoughts are with his loved one at this extremely difficult time and we are working hard to provide for his colleagues. Grief counselors at our nearby facility. An investigation is ongoing and company leadership is on site to provide support.” The incident remains under investigation.

The accident is still under investigation.
