PHUKET: Rewat Areerob, chairman of the Phuket Provincial Administrative Organization (PPAO), made an urgent appeal for foreigners to donate blood after a series of traffic accidents involving foreigners in Phuket.

In a notice posted online today (December 16), Mr Rewat noted that there is currently a “serious shortage of Rh-negative blood” on the island.

Despite ongoing blood donations organized by the Phuket Red Cross Society, Rh negative is not overly common among Asians, including Thais.

When the number of foreigners, including tourists, who needed blood during hospital treatment began to increase, the decrease in the number of Rh-negative blood donations led to a shortage of much-needed blood types.

“The shortage of Rh-negative blood is due to the increasing number of foreigners suffering accidents in Phuket,” Mr Rewat said in today’s appeal.

“We would like to invite all foreign residents and expatriates to donate blood,” Mr Rewat said.

On December 22, from 10:30 am to 4 pm, immigration officials will hold a special blood drive for the first flood in the Central Floresta mall together with the main government hospital on the island, Vachira Phuket Hospital.

“Give blood today and together save more lives,” Mr Rewat said.
