British stone. LOUIS, Missouri (KMOV) – Icy conditions led to multiple accidents on highways in the St. Louis area early Saturday morning.
An accident involving a semitrailer and multiple vehicles closed two lanes of I-55 near the Arsenal and blocked northbound traffic through the Potomac. Several semi-trailers were involved in the incident on I-55 and the park, closing the northbound lanes. An accident also closed two eastbound lanes on the Poplar Street Bridge, which also caused traffic chaos. Another crash closed three lanes of eastbound I-64 near 14th Street in downtown St. Louis.
All lanes of southbound I-55 near Route Z in Jefferson County were closed early morning due to a truck accident; the wreckage has since been cleared. A crash also closed all lanes of the Jefferson Barracks Bridge. An accident closed all westbound lanes on the Stan Musial Veterans Memorial Bridge.
Footage from MoDOT cameras showed icy freeways in parts of the St. Louis area early Saturday morning. Unexpected inches of snow fell in parts of St. Louis. Four roads were not preconditioned due to no measurable snow in the forecast, MoDOT told the news. The agency said it received a call about the slick road around 2:30 a.m. and immediately dispatched crews to address the problem. MoDOT believes that over time, as temperatures gradually increase, a treatment should work.
An intense snow band formed earlier this morning, pushing further north than initially expected. The band overcame dry air and warm surfaces 15° above freezing. Because of this, intense bands formed and brought down high totals, especially in Illinois. If the snow wasn’t that big, the flakes would melt when they hit the surface and wouldn’t cause the smooth blobs we see.
