Shay Mooney says he lost 54 pounds, updates on fitness journey

Shay Mooney is feeling healthier than ever.

The singer and his Dan + Shay bandmate Dan Smyers stopped by The Today Show’s Studio 1A on Wednesday to meet the TODAY crew. At one point during the interview, co-host Craig Melvin couldn’t help but point out the pair’s new looks.

“You’ve always been handsome, but it looks like you’ve lost half Dan and half Shay,” he said, making the musicians giggle.

Smiles jokingly replied: “In New York City, it all goes out the window. You walk down the street and there’s pizza everywhere.”

Mooney agreed, adding: “Too much pizza, man.”

Curious as to what prompted Mooney’s recent 50-pound loss, Craig said: “You’ve lost a lot of weight. What are you doing?”

The 30-year-old responded modestly: “I always have. You know, I have to stand next to this guy all the time” and pointed to his teammate.

Mooney, whose wife Hannah Billingsley is pregnant with their third son, went on to explain what prompted him to lose weight.

“There was a moment where I didn’t feel healthy. It wasn’t necessarily about my appearance, it was about feeling healthy. I lost about 53 or 54 pounds,” he said.

Craig was impressed, but made sure to tell Mooney he always looked great and said, “Well, you used to be handsome and sexy.”

“Well, thank you very much. I guess we just have a little time,” Mooney replied, shaking Craig’s hand.

In October, Mooney told his Instagram followers that he had lost nearly 50 pounds in five months.

“Thank you so much for all the kind words about how healthy I look,” he wrote. “Really significant. I believe it’s been over 5 months and I’ve lost almost 50 lbs. For those who ask: eat clean/no alcohol, walk 7 miles a day. Still some weight. That’s it! I completely changed my lifestyle and I’ve never felt better physically, mentally and spiritually.”
