TUMAKURU: Seven people, including three young men from Bengaluru, were killed in two accidents on two highways in Tumakuru district on Wednesday. In the first incident, a car fell from the Jogihalli Bridge on NH-48 near Bengaluru-Pune at around 5.15pm. Anil, Kiran and Bharat, aged 25-30, who worked in the audit office in Basaveshwara Nagara, were killed and two of their friends were seriously injured.

Originally from North Karnataka, they returned to Bangalore after attending a friend’s wedding in Sindhanur. Kalambela police said the vehicle was speeding. The injured were transferred to hospital, where one is said to be in critical condition.

In the second incident, a family of four died when a Canter van collided with their car on Bengaluru-Honnavara NH-206 on the Doddaguni-Kondli Cross section of Gubbi taluk on Wednesday afternoon.

The dead were identified as Ramanna (58), brother Narayanappa (54), wife Nagarathnamma (died in hospital) and their son Sagar (20), who were driving. The deceased were residents of Hegganahalli and Magadi Road districts in Bangalore who had returned home after visiting their hometown Naduvanahalli village in Chikkanayakanahalli taluk. Their pet dog was also killed in the accident.

The van headed towards Tiptur was trying to overtake another vehicle head-on when it was traveling in the opposite direction. Locals say NH-206 is being widened to four lanes and motorists are finding it difficult to navigate curves in some places. Guppy police opened a case for investigation.
