ROH star Jay Briscoe dies in car crash at 38

Legendary Ring of Honor star and ROH tag team champion Jay Briscoe (real name Jamin Pugh) tragically passed away Tuesday night in a car accident.

Shore News Beacon reported that “four patients were trapped” in the fatal crash. The report noted two deaths and “two critically ill patients”, one of whom was described as “pediatric”.

ROH boss Tony Khan confirmed the news.

“Sadly, Jamin Pugh has passed away. Fans called him Jay Briscoe, he was a star on ROH for over 20 years, from his first show to today,” Khan said via Twitter hours after Briscoe’s death.

“Jay and his brother Mark ruled ROH and are champions to this day. We will do everything we can to support his family.”

“Rest in peace, Jimin.”

Although Jay and Mark Briscoe’s careers spanned 20 years, it’s fair to say they’ve had their best years in recent years. The Briscoes and FTR rewrote tag team history in Final Battle 2021 with Game of the Year contenders. The two teams continued a very bloody, very entertaining trilogy that culminated in a double dog collar match at Final Battle 2022.

Team Briscoe has long been considered by die-hard wrestling fans as one of the best tag team teams in the world. With the acquisition of ROH by AEW and Tony Khan, their popularity increased.

It will be interesting to see how AEW handles Briscoe’s pass in less than 24 hours of AEW Dynamite. On notice, AEW honored the life and legacy of Brody Lee (Jon Huber) in 2020 with what many consider to be the greatest wrestling tribute of all time. Given Tony Khan’s greater sympathy for the wrestling industry, it’s a safe bet that the promotion will properly honor Briscoe’s incredible legacy on Wednesday night.
