Raton man killed in Fresno County car crash

One dead, two injured in Fresno car accident

On the afternoon of December 10, 2022, a 69-year-old man from Raton was killed in a two-vehicle collision in Fresno County. The crash happened around 3:20 p.m. on East Mountain View Avenue near Southbound Highway 41 and Caruthers.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) said the man was driving a white pickup truck on Highway 4 when it crashed into a black Range Rover. The pickup then swerved and hit a fence. Paramedics arrived and pronounced the pickup truck driver dead at the scene.

The driver of the Range Rover, a 40-year-old man, and his passenger were taken to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries. Following the accident and investigation, southbound traffic on Highway 41 was jammed for more than a mile.

Drugs and alcohol did not appear to be a factor in the fatal crash, the CHP said.

Traffic accidents are a common cause of wrongful death

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), approximately 200,000 auto accidents result in injuries in California each year. Of these collisions, more than 3,000 resulted in fatalities. Many of these tragic crashes are caused by speeding, distracted or impaired driving.

According to police data:

  • More than 40 percent of California drivers killed in crashes tested positive for alcohol or drugs.
  • More fatal crashes occur in rural areas as people speed and pay less attention to potential hazards.
  • Fatal accidents are more common at night due to poor visibility and the possibility of impaired human driving.
  • Motorists who test positive for alcohol or drugs account for one-third of all crashes.

Losing a loved one in a preventable accident

Suddenly losing someone you love is devastating. However, if the death is preventable, the trauma is far greater. Tragedy like this can often be overwhelming, especially when dealing with insurance companies and unexpected expenses. When a loved one is killed in a car accident due to the negligence of another person, surviving family members may be eligible to file a wrongful death claim. While no amount of compensation can fill the void, this money can help you and your family get justice and secure your future.
