LONDON: The UAE Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure (MOEI) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the International P&I Club (IGP&I) to provide a prompt and efficient response to serious maritime accidents or accidents and the possibility of clearing the accident wreckage caused.
The Memorandum of Understanding was signed by Hessa Al Malek, Adviser to the Minister for Maritime Affairs at the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, and Nick Shaw, P&I Group Chief Executive Officer, in the presence of HE Suhail Al Mazrouei, Minister of Energy and Infrastructure. The signing ceremony at the IMO headquarters in London was attended by several other officials from both parties, various maritime authorities, companies and UAE ports.
HE Suhail Al Mazrouei, Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, said: “The UAE is considered one of the key members of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and has played an integral role in the development of maritime safety and incident response. In the past, the country has Is a founding member of the Riyadh Memorandum of Understanding for Maritime Safety and Effective and Efficient Maritime Transport in the Arabian Gulf Region. We continuously strive to improve the safety of ships and seafarers. Our partnership with IGP&I is a commendable step , it is in line with our goals and supports the IMO’s cause to protect ships, the environment and crews. We are sure that this MoU will not only improve the situation in the region, but also have an international impact as the UAE has partnerships with Australia, Canada, Countries like France and Germany are category B members of the IMO Council.”
Strengthen maritime business
The MoU will positively impact the shipping industry in more than one way. The UAE is one of the major international maritime centers and the country’s ports are among the busiest in the world, servicing more than 25,000 ships and handling around 17 million containers annually. IGP&I provides liability insurance for approximately 90% of the world’s ocean-going tonnage. So this partnership could help the industry not only in terms of safety, but also financially, environmentally and otherwise.
HE Al Malek explained: “The UAE holds a key position in the maritime sector. The country connects shipping lines from all over the world and its ports handle thousands of ships every year, which speaks volumes for the importance of the UAE in the global shipping industry. This This MoU will help us improve our safety measures and prepare for a better and faster response in any emergency. While international organizations are working hard for the safety and well-being of seafarers, as part of this industry, We have a responsibility to ensure the safety of our frontline workers and the smooth running of offshore operations under all circumstances.”
Reduce the risk of maritime accidents
Nick Shaw said: “IGP&I is honored to build an even stronger relationship with the UAE, a key regional player in the international maritime industry. We strongly believe this collaboration is an important step towards improving safety and helping to protect the marine environment. As we cover a wide range of liabilities including loss of life and personal injury to crew, passengers and others on board, pollution, cargo loss and damage, wreck removal and other claims, we look forward to working with the UAE to help minimize such incidents damage in this part of the world.”
Under the MoU, training courses and workshops will be provided for industry professionals. In the event of a serious accident, the MOEI and IGP&I member clubs will jointly participate in response and post-incident assessment activities. There will be a prompt and effective response to serious maritime incidents or accidents, especially those involving actual or potential wreck removal operations, environmental damage, or threats of the same.
