Man threatens do-gooders with rifle after traffic accident

A man threatened a couple with a rifle after they allegedly offered him a ride after a road accident. He had just reportedly assaulted a woman after a hotel drug deal.

Jose Daniel Rodriguez was arrested Sunday, the Laredo Police Department announced.

The 24-year-old was charged with two counts of false imprisonment occasioning grievous bodily harm. He was remanded to the Weber County Jail and faces $10,000 bond on each charge.

The LPD said the crash happened about 7:50 p.m. in the 1900 block of Jarvis Avenue.

A man was reportedly involved in a car accident and a passing couple stopped to offer him help. Rodriguez allegedly asked for a ride to a residence in South Laredo, and the couple agreed to drive him.

However, during the ride, Rodriguez began threatening the couple, police said. The suspect allegedly “displayed a rifle in a threatening manner and began behaving oddly toward the couple.”

Police said the victims were all “fearing for their lives, thinking they would be killed if they tried to stop or run away”.

At some point during the drive, one of the victims was able to call 911. But Rodriguez allegedly picked up the phone and began talking to 911 himself.

Since the couple was not injured, the man was eventually apprehended near the 500 block of Century Drive, the LPD said. The man was found with a long rifle in the back seat of his car.

Additionally, Rodriguez was apparently involved in another incident an hour earlier.

The LPD said it received a call around 6:30 p.m. Sunday to report an attack at a motel in the 9000 block of San Dario.

One said a man sold them drugs in their room before assaulting a woman in the room.

The man was allegedly armed with a rifle and issued a BOLO at the time of the attack.
