The first snowstorm of the season posed challenges for commuters Monday morning and delayed the start of some local schools.
Several accidents were reported on snowy and icy roads in the area when the snowpack started to pile up early Sunday night before tapering off Monday morning.
Before and in the early hours of this fast moving storm, there was enough snow and the plowshares were out early to tackle the roads.
Between 2 and 4 inches have been recorded in this area, but the amount varies widely across the area.
The Attleboro Water Department measured 1 1/2 inches of snow.
In comparison, a total of 5 1/2 inches was measured in Burrillville, Rhode Island
Schools, including Seekonk, were delayed by an hour on Monday morning.
The temperature in the 20s and the cold wind in the 10s not only look like winter, but also feel like winter.
Winter will officially arrive on Wednesday, December 21st.
Foxborough and Norton had 2 inches of snow as of 9 p.m. Sunday, North Attleboro 1.6 inches and Mansfield 1 inch, the weather report said.
North Attleboro Police reported on social media that their 4pm-12am shift had responded to multiple motor vehicle crashes, urging drivers to slow down and exercise caution.
Mansfield Police posted: “Flakes flying around Mansfield! DPW has been handling the roads, but we still need to go back to our memories and enable snow mode for Sunday driving.
“Parking is slippery and turns are slippery, so slow down, take your time and leave enough space between you and your new friend driving ahead of you.”
About 70 incidents were reported in the Worcester area.
Pittsfield in western Massachusetts was hit by 7 1/2 inches, and Chester, near Springfield, was hit by 8 inches.
Southeastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island are expected to see just one inch of snow through Friday.
Attleboro Water recorded wind gusts of 15 mph at 4.30am and a low of 24C was observed between 2am and 7am
Mostly sunny Monday, temperatures should peak in the mid-30s, but feel like the 20s amidst the blustery winds. Meteorologists say it should be well into the teens and twenties overnight.
Overall, a cold but dry week is expected.
Last winter, the Attleboro Water Department recorded no snowfall in December, the first snow fell in January, and a memorable blizzard later that month dropped 30 inches (Norton) in the area, including 2 feet in Attleboro.
