Department spokeswoman Sarah Campbell said the initial call for service was made at around 12:25 p.m. and emergency services arrived quickly.

After the first responders arrived on the scene, an additional tanker task force, a fire task force and a rapid intervention team were called in — all of which provided more water and personnel to extinguish the fire, Dmuchowski said.

About 75 fire and rescue personnel from Frederick and Washington counties were on the scene.

Campbell said the fire started on the back of the roof of the house near the chimney and spread from there. Fire and rescue crews took an hour to extinguish most of the blaze and another two hours to extinguish burning embers and remaining low-temperature hotspots, she said.

Campbell said at 3 p.m. that firefighters had arrived to investigate the cause of the fire and estimate the extent of the damage. She said it was unclear when that information would be available.

Mike and TJ King, a married couple who live across the street from the fire, said their close-knit community will come together to support neighbors who have lost their homes.

“Everyone is here forever,” said Mike King, who moved to Poffenberger Road with his wife in 2007. Kings said they are the second newest residents on the winding roads of Jefferson Country.

Neighbors take care of each other, and TJ King said they will continue to do so.
