UTSA leads Troy at halftime
UTSA drove all the way to the start of the second quarter and got a 2-yard touchdown off Zakhari Franklin. None of the 15 games had a pass of more than 10 yards.
Frank Harris took a huge hit on the next possession but was able to walk away on his own. Jared Sackett would knock down FG for 42 yards to give the Roadrunners a 12-0 lead.
With 3:52 left in the half, Troy ran a solid drive assisted by three UTSA defensive free throws that led to a 2-yard score by Kimani Vidal.
When everything looked normal, Troy took down Frank Harris with less than a minute left in the game. The Trojans had good possession before halftime and could have added more points, but UTSA DB Kelechi Nwachuku took Gunnar Watson in the end zone to end the first half. UTSA led 12-7 at halftime.

UTSA leads 2-0 (yes 2-0) over Troy
An interesting sight to watch at the Cure Bowl, as no players from either team were turned away or had to sit out.
The MVP of the first 10 minutes of the Cure Bowl was UTSA punter Lucas Dean. He pinned the Trojans’ offense inside the 5-yard line twice, including a 67-yard punt.
A few plays later, a poor field goal from the Troy center went through the end zone and it’s now 2-0 UTSA through the quarter.

UAB rally, then postponed Miami (Ohio)
UAB responded to Miami’s surge in the third quarter with a 3-yard touchdown run by Jermaine Brown Jr. Matt Quinn made a good field goal and the Blazers took a 17-13 lead in the fourth quarter.
But the Redhawks responded with a 10-yard touchdown of their own. Aveon Smith passed the ball to Kenny Tracy for a touchdown — a pass that put Miami back on top, 20-17.
But UAB responded with a 12-yard touchdown pass by Jermaine Brown with less than two minutes left in the game. Quinn’s field goal gave UAB the win in the Bahamas Bowl as UAB stopped Miami at the 3-yard line on one last attempt to regain the lead and UAB won 24-20.

No. 25 UTSA without WR Joshua Cephus
No. 25 UTSA will be without WR Joshua Cephus, one of the Roadrunners’ top receiving weapons against No. 24 Troy in today’s Cure Bowl. The Roadrunners are already without De’Corian Clark, who ended the season with an injury in November. UTSA has a new general in Justin Burke, who was promoted by coach Jeff Traylor to replace Roadrunners offensive coordinator Will Stein, who holds the same job at Oregon (Will Stein).
But UTSA still has sixth-year quarterback Frank Harris, one of the best quarterbacks in the country. Harris recently announced he will return in 2023 for his seventh and final season.

Taylor: Gervin Dexter, Richard Gulag bring old-school loyalty
Florida State’s defense has been mediocre in the Gervon Dexter era. If that descriptor sounds overly generous, keep in mind that 1) it’s a holiday, and 2) our editorial policy strongly discourages more naughty words.
But say this at the end of the Dexter era in Florida: At least he stuck around.
After committing to the NFL draft, Dexter might flip a tire or pull on a resistance band at some training facility. Instead, he joined his college teammates at the Las Vegas Bowl in preparation for Saturday’s game against No. 14 Oregon State.

Florida vs. Oregon: Odds, expert picks for Las Vegas Bowl
This year’s Las Vegas Bowl is the first Power 5 vs. Power 5 matchup of the bowl season. Oregon and Florida will face off at Allegiant Stadium, and on paper, it looks like a bit of a mismatch.
The Beavers are favored in double digits for several reasons. OSU finished the regular season 9-3 with a 9-3 victory over rival Oregon State to finish in the top 15. Florida, meanwhile, is limping to a 6-6 record after losing four of its final six games and will be without quarterback Anthony Richardson, who opted out of the bowl game to prepare NFL draft.

Predicted score for each game
It’s bowl season, which means nearly every day of the week for the next few weeks. It also means that there are a lot of opt-outs and transfers.
My model is trying to predict a score, but needs to make a big statement about what to expect from the prediction. Opt-outs and transfers have been tweaked at launch, but those player moves add more variables than most of the regular season. For example, while I did my best to consider how much Purdue’s loss of Aiden O’Connell and Charlie Jones would affect the Boilermakers, there’s no solid data on replacements. There are also some coaching changes and interim coaching in charge that could change the style of teams we see in the regular season.

Cincinnati wins in ’embarrassing’, narrative-rich Fenway Bowl game
Kerry Coombs loves to tell stories. So when someone asked the Bearcats’ interim coach about playing a football game at Fenway Park, Coombs quickly flipped over the back cover of his childhood.
“So in 1975, I was a kid, right? I was 14 and watched Carlton Fisk do it,” Coombs said, excitedly imitating the former Red Sox catcher hitting his home run Famous move into fair zone to win Game 6 of the 1975 World Series. “Against my big red machine. I remember it very well. I remember sitting on the couch watching that play. I’ve never been to Fenway Park, never seen a baseball game there. I’ve seen it on TV. I think it’s really cool. I think we’re all really excited about it.”

How does UConn bowl?
It’s not about proving people wrong or putting chips on their shoulders, Jim Mora said. He doesn’t want to say he told you.
But he also does want to say that he told you. He earned the right in his first year as coach after leading UConn to its first bowl game in seven years.
“I don’t think I should have been fired from UCLA,” Mora said. “I think they made a mistake. I still think they made a mistake.”
There have been few 6-6 bowl appearances more impressive or surprising, and Mora was the director. The Huskies are gearing up for Monday’s Myrtle Beach Bowl game against Marshall, the first bowl game for a group of players who have gone through college careers.

origin of the name of the college football bowl
Would college bowling under any other company name sell as well?
Sorry, Mr. Shakespeare, but bowling season is upon us, which means it’s time to check out the sometimes inexplicable company names that companies pay for college football bowling.
The classic example is of course the Poulan Weed-Eater Independence Bowl, a silly name that’s been around from 1990-97. For those too young to remember, Poulan Weed-Eater was a brand of gas and electric lawn mowers and weed trimmers. Much like many bowling games, the game went on to have a string of corporate names (Sanford, MainStay, PetroSun, AdvoCare, Duck Commander, Camping World, and Walk-On’s).
