A giant aquarium containing one million liters of water burst in the lobby of the Radisson Blu in Berlin, flooding the hotel and nearby streets.
A spokesman for the Berlin fire brigade told the BBC that the vast majority of the fish had died and that the cold weather had made rescues more difficult. There are over 100 different species in the tank.
A police source told local media there was no evidence the break was the result of a targeted attack. — BBC
The €12.8 million ($13.85 million) Radisson Blu Hotel in the central Mitte district is believed to be the world’s largest cylindrical fish tank and housed 1,500 fish before the accident, according to reports. Only two people were reported injured.
A cold snap currently testing the country’s sick winter heating problems is believed to be the culprit. Berlin police were forced to close a busy section of Karl-Liebknecht Strasse due to the damage.
Police said there were no signs of targeted violence at the large aquarium in central Berlin.
The giant tank “burst suddenly”, the fire brigade added.
