Atascosa County Sheriff’s Deputy Alan Perez, 27, was killed in an accident near Poteet early Friday morning while off duty. Jourdanton Police Department Sergeant Alexis Hernandez, who was in the car with him, was injured and remains in hospital.

Deputy Perez has been with ACSO since May 2022.

“Everyone in the Sheriff’s Office is devastated to receive this news,” said ACSO Sergeant David Thorward. “Alan was well-loved by his peers and our hearts go out to his family and others involved in this. Praying for those who have had a tragic accident. It will never be easy, but we have to get over it.”

Jourdanton Police Chief Eric Kaiser said the love and concern for Officer Alexis Hernandez has only deepened his awe for the community during these difficult times.

“This community continues to amaze me,” Chief Kaiser said. “They have often shown that when adversity strikes, they are there for those who need them. I want to thank each of you who have been praying for Officer Hernandez and asking how you can help her. Myself and Members of our department are in touch with her and her family on a daily basis to ensure that the immediate needs of her and her children are being met. We have a saying, “In this family, no one is alone! “Rest assured that Officer Hernandez will prepare her law enforcement brothers and sisters, as well as the entire community, as she begins her road to recovery.”

The Texas Department of Public Safety is investigating the accident.

According to an obituary with his full name, Alan Eduardo Perez-Navejar, he dedicated his life to military service and spent his adult life in the U.S. Army and as a peace officer in Texas.

U.S. Congressman Henry Cuellar said: “My condolences to the family of Atascosa County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Alan Perez, who was killed in a traffic accident near Poteet. My prayers also go out to the female passenger who was hospitalized — I wish you a speedy recovery. My thoughts and prayers.”
