Five people were killed in four separate crashes in eastern Iowa over the course of five days.
The most recent incident involving four vehicles occurred at about 1pm on Thursday, January 12. The driver of the Jeep Cherokee struck a snowplow transport in Iowa while traveling eastbound on I-80 at mile marker 213 (near the Marengo exit). According to an incident report by the Iowa State Patrol, the plow “was engaged in a slow-moving interstate repair project over the left shoulder.”
Snowplow driver David Dellamuth, 52, of Williamsburg, was injured. He was taken to Marengo Hospital for treatment. The woman driving the jeep was killed in the accident. She has been identified as Joyce Baumgarten, 64, of Cedar Rapids. People in the other two vehicles were not injured.
One killed in accident in Marion
One person was killed in a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of Highway 100 and East Post Road in Marion on Wednesday afternoon, January 11. A car was struck by a semi-trailer while turning southbound on East Post Road into eastbound Highway 100. The semi was traveling in the westbound lanes of Highway 100 when it hit the car on the driver’s side, according to KCRG.
The person driving the car was killed in the crash, which happened just after 2.15pm. They have not yet been identified pending notification from next of kin. The man driving the semi-trailer was charged with failing to obey traffic control equipment.
Cedar Rapids man killed on I-380
Eric Taylor, 37, of Cedar Rapids was killed in a crash on northbound I-380 just before 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, January 10. He was killed when his Volvo rear-ended a semi that slowed down due to towing maneuvers several miles ahead.
Two killed in 16-vehicle crash on I-80
Two people from eastern Iowa and Texas were killed in a series of chain reaction accidents on I-80 in Iowa City on Sunday morning, January 8. A semi on westbound I-80 blocked all three lanes by 5:30 a.m. A series of accidents ensues.
David Mosinski, 57, of Fairfield, Iowa, was killed when he hit the trailer of the collapsible semi-trailer. Junier Caballero-Venero of Houston, Texas, was a passenger in the semifinals. He was killed after getting out of the car. All other injuries are minor.
