Allan Juarez and Guatemala open the U-20 World Cup on Saturday against New Zealand.
BERKELEY – California Men’s Soccer Midfielder Allan Juarez was named on Guatemala’s roster for the FIFA U20 World Cup, which begins Saturday in Argentina. One of 24 teams in the field, Guatemala opens the tournament against New Zealand on Saturday at 3pm ART/11am PDT at Estadio Único Madre de Ciudades in Santiago del Estero.
“We are extremely proud of Allan to be able to represent his national team at a World Youth Championship,” Cal head coach Leonard Griffin said. “For many this is a dream come true and we know for Allan this is just the beginning. Allan has worked extremely hard to get to Cal and even harder while here at Berkeley to get this dream come true. There is no doubt that Allan will grow as a player and person through this experience, and we are excited that he can help continue to push our program forward.”
The 19-year-old Juarez, who hails from San Francisco, is a product of the San Jose Earthquakes Academy. He wore No. 5 in his first season for the Blue & Gold last fall and will wear Guatemala’s No. 13 jersey at the U-20 World Cup.
Guatemala will compete in Group A alongside hosts Argentina, Uzbekistan and New Zealand. After Saturday’s opening d. la azul y blanco play Argentina on May 23 at 6 p.m. ART/2 p.m. PDT and conclude group play against Uzbekistan on May 26 at 6:00 PM ART/2:00 PM PDT, with all of Guatemala’s group games taking place in Santiago del Estero. FS2 will broadcast each of Guatemala’s group matches, with the telecast of the New Zealand match delayed on Sunday at 5 a.m. PDT, the Argentina game aired live and the Uzbekistan game shown on delay on May 26 at 7:00 PM PDT.
The U-20 World Cup concludes with the final on 11 June.
