Cincinnati is the #2 beer city in the country, but how do our local breweries stack up against some of the most famous craft beer producers in the world?
The Brewers Association, a not-for-profit organization that promotes and protects small and independent craft brewers, released the 2023 World Beer Cup winners. Four Greater Cincinnati breweries made the list, beating out thousands of brewers around the world.

Rhinegeist Brewery in Over-the-Rhine took first place for best American cream ale with its Cheetah lager. Voss at Sonder Brewery in Mason was also ranked No. 1 for Best German-Style Koelsch. Streetside Brewery’s Black Cat came in second for best English-style brown ale, and Higher Purpose from Third Eye Brewing Co. in Sharonville placed third for best sweet or cream stout.
Four additional Ohio breweries also won awards: Fat Head’s Brewery & Saloon in North Olmsted, Fat Head’s Brewery in Middleburg Heights, Hoppin’ Frog Brewery in Akron and Wolf’s Ridge Brewing in Columbus. No Kentucky-based breweries were included on the list.
According to a press release, 307 winners across 103 beer categories received gold, silver or bronze awards. A panel of 272 judges from 26 countries evaluated over 10,000 entries from 2,376 breweries in 61 countries.

“The World Beer Cup brings together the finest brewers and beers from around the globe and celebrates creativity, craftsmanship and passion for great beer,” Chris Williams, World Beer Cup competition director, said in a statement. “Receiving a World Beer Cup award is a testament to quality and innovation, and we commend this year’s winners for setting the bar higher than ever.”
Since 1996, the World Beer Cup, also known as the “Olympic Games of beer”, has recognized international brewing expertise, promotes consumer awareness of different beer styles and has become one of the most prestigious beer competitions in the world.
A 2023 World Beer Cup awards ceremony was held on May 10 in Nashville, Tennessee.
